Understanding Detox

Detoxification is the process of allowing the body to rid itself of an addictive substance while managing the symptoms of withdrawal, which vary with the type of drug. For example, physical symptoms of heroin withdrawal may include restlessness, muscle and bone pain, insomnia, diarrhea, vomiting, and cold flashes. These physical symptoms may last for several days, but the general depression, or dysphoria (opposite of euphoria), that often accompanies heroin withdrawal may last for weeks. In many cases, withdrawal can be easily treated with medications to ease the symptoms, but treating withdrawal is not the same as treating addiction.

Our Detox Program in San Jose CA

If you’ve been abusing drugs or alcohol on a regular basis over months or years, chances are that you will suffer a detox reaction to its sudden absence. Detox symptoms vary, but most often involve intense, flu-like symptoms, including headache, chills, fever, cold sweats, and delirium. Mentally, detox sufferers feel a terrible sense of emptiness and longing that seems to intensify with each passing minute.   They may become depressed, despondent, even suicidal.

Many of our patients simply can’t handle these symptoms on their own, and require close medical supervision to ensure they get through the process safely. Our Detox programs are designed to smooth the path between addiction and sobriety, to better enable our patients to make the transition smoothly.

Our programs are customized to meet the requirements of the individual and are designed to last as long as necessary to safely withdraw from a specific substance. Detoxification programs are offered on an inpatient or outpatient basis according to need. For serious addiction, detox often requires round-the-clock medical supervision to avoid serious complications.

Detoxification is not the same as addiction treatment.  It is only the first phase of treatment and recovery. Call us today!
